Senior Citizens in Myrtle Beach Learn to use the Internet

March 3, 2008

Senior Citizen's who chose to retire in Myrtle Beach or make it a second home find not only the beauty and charm of the area, but ways to develop new skills and stay up to date in today’s rapidly changing society. Mrs. Ann Murrey, a winter resident at the Myrtle Beach Resort said "My husband took a computer class for senior citizens at Coastal Carolina University. Now, he sets up his computer upon arrival."

Recent surveys show that adult education tends to attract the most highly educated and affluent groups in the population and learning to use computer technology can provide older adults opportunities for lifelong learning. Myrtle Beach's Coastal Carolina University and Horry Technical College afford the older adults, who make a home in this area, classes that help in the development of these skills.

Coastal Carolina's lifelong learn program offers older adults an array of classes in how to use the computer to do just about anything from designing your on websites to using word perfect and excel.

Horry Technical College not only offers classes but also is interested in having senior adults share their experiences with the college students there. Those who are interested in volunteering, teaching or who have suggestions for additional classes should contact the college.

More and more senior adults are logging on to the Internet for information on health care, discounts, financial management and more. Websites are available for senior adults that are easily accessible. Some of the most popular websites for senior adults are listed below.

Because of the number of senior adults as well as disabled persons using the computer there is hardware being designed to make it more accessible physically as well. A large keyboard with bigger keys and larger letters has been created called big keys lx. There are magnifiers, which you can clip to your screen.

Another way to become more comfortable with your computer is to make use of the many books available to help with learning about the computer. One very popular book published by Amazon is titled The Seniors Guide to Easy Computing by Rebecca Sharp.
